Copland Track
Copland Track is a rugged one-way tramping hike in Westland Tai Poutini National Park, South Island, with the classic endpoint at Welcome Flat hot pools. Expect a demanding day covering about 18 km (one-way to Welcome Flat) and typically 6–8 hours each way to that hut area, with the track continuing higher for an extended overnight option to Douglas Rock Hut.
The route starts from the Copland Track car park on State Highway 6, south of Fox Glacier, and then runs through the Copland Valley. Seasonality and planning matter: overnight stays at Welcome Flat Hut require advance booking in the peak summer period. Wet weather can increase hazards on the Copland Track, including flooding risks and dangerous river conditions, so parties generally treat river crossings as the controlling factor in go/no-go decisions.
