Cottonwood Creek Shelter Cabin

Cottonwood Creek Shelter Cabin is an NPS emergency shelter cabin in Bering Land Bridge National Preserve along existing winter routes. The cabin is in poor condition; last repairs were completed in August 2006, and the stove, stovepipe, fuel tank, and one window require replacement. It’s a cabin built around 1917 by the Alaska Road Commission, and it’s eligible for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.

The shelter is equipped with a Nordic stove and a woodstove/fireplace is provided. All shelter cabins require you to bring your own #1 diesel fuel to heat the cabin, and food and water are not available in the shelter cabins. NPS also notes ongoing permafrost melt can cause these cabins to sink or become unleveled, and some cabins are only to be used as lifesaving shelters.
