Dale Clemens Cabin

Dale Clemens Cabin is a rustic backcountry cabin in the Chugach National Forest, managed by the US Forest Service. It’s a two-story cabin with a wooden deck, an outhouse outside, and heat from a Nordic oil drip stove; there’s no electricity and no potable water, mattresses, bedding, or cooking utensils provided.

The cabin sleeps up to 8 people, with bunk space for 6. Use is reservation-based (you must have a valid cabin reservation), and alcohol is prohibited; camping or staying overnight within 300 feet of the cabin is also prohibited unless you have a reservation. Fuel is brought by guests: kerosene/#1 heating oil is required at 1 gallon per day June–August and 2 gallons per day the rest of the year, and water from lakes or streams must be boiled or treated.

Getting there is by trail from the Seward Highway. From Mile 5, it’s a 4.5-mile hike in summer or a 2.5-mile ski/snowmobile route in winter; from Mile 17 at Primrose Campground and Trailhead, it’s 12.6 miles on a steep, rugged trail. Fees are time-sensitive: the nightly rate is listed as $75, with a Recreation.gov transaction fee, and reservations can be made up to 180 days in advance.
