Dronningruta

Dronningruta—also called “Queen’s Route”—is a famous loop hike in Norway’s Vesterålen, assembled around the historic fishing villages of Stø and Nyksund on Langøya. The route is about 11.71 km and typically takes 5–8 hours depending on pace.

The loop combines two styles of walking. The mountain route climbs to higher, rock-and-earth terrain over ridgelines between Stø and Nyksund, while the coastal route stays closer to the shoreline for a comparatively gentler return.

Marked trail guidance uses the Norwegian Trekking Association’s red “T” symbols, and the route is described as a demanding hike (red). Plan for long hill walking and exposed, uneven sections, with the highest point reported as Finngamheia (448 m).

A common approach is to go from Stø to Nyksund via the mountain path, then return to Stø along the coastal path, so the steepest work is treated as an uphill day rather than a steep descent.

Terrain along the coastal side includes marshy ground and wet sections, and it also passes Skipssanden, a white-sand beach used as a notable stop on this route.

Seasonally, Dronningruta is a well-known summer hiking objective in Vesterålen (the route’s standard planning and timing are often given as a 5–8 hour day), with snow-free conditions typically needed for the ridge and coastal foot travel.

For trip logistics, access to trailheads is usually handled by reaching Stø or Nyksund by road and local transport, with Sortland commonly used as the practical hub for getting to the area.

If you’re planning an overnight, the area supports wild camping under Norway’s general rules (stay at least 150 m from buildings), with the ridge side commonly noted as windy and coastal sections noted as very wet.
