Eagle Walk - East Tyrol

Eagle Walk (Adlerweg) in East Tyrol is a hut-to-hut alpine long-distance hike running across the Hohe Tauern region. The curated route on Outmap is mapped as a multi-day line with a total length of 104.69 km.

The east route is split into nine day stages and is described as traveling from Ströden at the foot of the Großvenediger to Stüdlhütte at the foot of the Großglockner. It follows the “eagle silhouette” through high alpine terrain in the Glockner and Venediger mountain groups.

A key character of the trail is altitude: most stages are run around the 2,000–2,500 m range, with substantial vertical work each day. The route is presented as requiring good fitness, sure-footedness, and a head for heights (some rope-secured sections are part of the standard experience).

Stage pacing works as a true long-distance hike rather than a single walk: an “average daily stage” is given as about 10 km and roughly 5 hours. While you can complete the tour in sequence, the route can also be shortened by descending to the valley on individual days.

On the early stages, the route is explicitly tied to the Umbal area and the glacier world of the Großvenediger massif—Ströden is treated as the trailhead area, and the Stage 1 endpoint is Johannishütte. The plan continues through named huts that act as your main navigation anchors: Johannishütte, Eisseehütte, Bonn-Matreier-Hütte, Badener Hütte, Matreier Tauernhaus, Sudetendeutsche Hütte, Kalser Tauernhaus, Stüdlhütte, and Lucknerhaus.

Seasonality is emphasized for this alpine line: the route is framed for summer hiking (July–September) rather than shoulder seasons. Keep expectations realistic for high terrain logistics: you’re spending most of your walking time above the tree line and relying on huts for breaks and overnight stays.
