Foss and Knowlton Trail

Foss and Knowlton Trail is a mostly level long-distance hike through the southwest corner of Baxter State Park. The route is mapped as a designated foot path and runs about 5.4 miles one-way.

This trail links the Appalachian Trail near Abol Bridge to Daicey Pond Campground. Along the way it passes remote pond locations including Lost Pond and Foss and Knowlton Pond.

The terrain is generally easy to moderate: expect typical Maine wilderness surfaces with rocks and roots, plus wet, muddy sections in the damp seasons. Because it stays relatively low, it’s also used for winter snowshoeing and shoulder-season hiking.

For a longer day, the route is commonly combined with the 1-mile Lost Pond Trail and Blueberry Ledges to make a fuller 12–14 mile loop-style hike.

Access is managed through Baxter State Park. Trailheads can be reached via Baxter State Park Tote Road near Daicey Pond, or by hiking in from the Golden Road/Abol Bridge area.

Baxter State Park regulations include a no-dogs rule on the trail, and day-use access requires the appropriate parking passes and day-use reservations.
