Hiking route

Franconia Ridge Loop is the classic White Mountains day-hike loop from the Lafayette Campground area in Franconia Notch, set up to climb onto the ridge and move between Little Haystack, Mount Lincoln, and Mount Lafayette before dropping off to return. The loop is mapped to about 8.66 km (8.9 miles) in this dataset.

Plan on strenuous effort: the ridge traverse is exposed, above-treeline hiking that can feel deceptively technical underfoot (rocky grades, boulder-strewn sections, and a knife-edge feeling along the Franconia Ridge Trail/connecting sections). Cumulative elevation gain is well over 3,800 ft for the route as commonly completed.

A common structure is a steep climb up one side using Falling Waters Trail to reach the ridge at Little Haystack, then a ridge-walk segment along the Franconia Ridge Trail (which coincides with the Appalachian Trail) through Mount Lincoln to Mount Lafayette. Expect the most demanding, fully exposed portion to be the ridge section between these high points.

After Mount Lafayette, the loop continues off the ridge via Greenleaf Trail to AMC Greenleaf Hut, then works back down through Old Bridle Path toward the start area at Lafayette Campground. This gives you a clean “up-and-across-and-out” loop pattern with a hut stop on the descent side.

Under fast-changing White Mountains weather, conditions on the ridge can turn quickly; visibility and wind are the main constraints. The route is also frequently busy in peak season, so start early if you want manageable trail traffic and smoother parking logistics at the Lafayette Campground trailhead area.

For logistics, plan to carry what you need for a long day—water and food—because you’re committing to an above-treeline traverse for much of the hike. Mobile coverage can drop above the treeline, so keep navigation offline (and don’t rely on phone maps for cairn/line-finding on exposed rock).
