Freeman Burn Hut

Freeman Burn Hut is a standard 10-bunk DOC backcountry hut in Fiordland National Park, near Lake Manapouri. It was built in the 1930s for walkers on the Bradshaw Sound – Lake Manapouri Track route between Bradshaw Sound and Lake Manapouri via the Camelot River and Freeman Burn, and it still stands as the only remaining one of the original four huts. The hut is located on a river terrace at the mouth of the Freeman Burn and was built with heart rimu and clad with corrugated iron to keep out Fiordland weather.

Use is first come, first served, and standard hut bookings aren’t required; before you go, you buy a Standard Hut Ticket for each night and place it in the honesty box at the hut, or you use a Backcountry Hut Pass. Fees are listed for stays through 30 June 2026, with rates changing from 1 July 2026. The hut has a fireplace, mattresses, and a pit latrine; drinking water is not provided. Access is by water taxi, by taking your own boat, or by kayak, and visitors are asked to take precautions to avoid spreading didymo on Lake Manapouri and nearby waterways (including clean, check, and dry gear after moving between waterways).
