Freezeout Trail
Freezeout Trail is an 8-mile round-trip hiking route in the Scientific Forest Management Area (SFMA) of northern Baxter State Park. The route runs from Trout Brook Farm Campground to the Frost Pond Trail, and it’s a short outing you can use as either an out-and-back or as part of a larger multi-trail backpacking loop.
The trail character is gentle overall because it follows old woods roads, but expect frequent route-reading work. The route is known for navigating around blowdowns and crossing wet spots where stream flow can make the crossing sloppy at times.
The route is built around occasional muddy or flooded conditions rather than dry tread. Wet crossings are a recurring issue, and the trail can involve periods where banks and low areas hold water, especially through summer.
Plan for river crossings and water management. Any stream crossings on the route (including Trout Brook) can run high, so timing matters; pack for wet feet and carry enough water capacity for the day or segment you’re hiking.
For a “long-distance” style hike day, it’s typically managed like a short SFMA mission rather than a big climbing objective. If you’re stacking trails into a loop, treat Freezeout Trail as a connector segment between Trout Brook Farm Campground and the Frost Pond Trail network.
Baxter State Park uses a reservation/fee system for access and camping, and dogs aren’t allowed in the park. Pack out all trash and follow park rules for human waste disposal; bring and treat water from natural sources.
