Frosty Mountain Trail is a day hike in E.C. Manning Provincial Park, British Columbia, built around the larch spectacle for early fall. It’s driven by a long uphill push from Lightning Lake toward alpine meadows, then a steeper, rockier upper section that carries you to Frosty Mountain’s high point near the Canada–United States border (about 2,408 m on the main summit you reach on typical routes).

From the Lightning Lake day use area, follow the trail on the lake’s east side and climb through a sustained forest switchback section. The pace stays steady for the first part, with the route gradually gaining height until you start transitioning away from the heavier treed climb.

Around the mid-hike mark you reach Frosty Creek campsite, where the trail continues past campground infrastructure (outhouse, emergency shelter, and tenting areas on-site). This is also the last practical place along the route to manage your pacing and supplies before the upper meadow and final ascent.

After the campsite the route steepens again for a short climb into the larch plateau/meadow area. In larch season, this is the core “gold larches” zone; the terrain eases to flatter travel for a stretch before the trail starts climbing more decisively above treeline.

As you work toward the ridgeline, the trail becomes rockier and enters the treeline-to-summit transition. The upper route involves following a worn path up a scree/slope to reach the ridge, then continuing along the ridge to the summit area; the final approach is comparatively short but slower going and more exposed to slip on loose rock.

Round-trip distance lands in the ~18–23 km range depending on how far you go and route choice, with full-day timing commonly around 7–10 hours. The effort is elevated by roughly 1,100–1,250 m of gain, so treat it as a challenging long day rather than a short climb.

If you plan the larch highlight, target late September through early October for gold timing (with potential snow and colder conditions higher on the mountain even when the parking area feels mild). Pack for variable alpine weather and wind, and plan water carefully because creek availability can be limited seasonally along the upper sections.
