Galu Temple - Kuvarasi via Indrahar Pass

Galu Temple - Kuvarasi via Indrahar Pass is a high-altitude Dhauladhar crossing in Himachal Pradesh, run as a long trek from the Galu Temple area above Dharamkot/McLeodganj to Kuvarasi on the Chamba side. The route centers on a summit crossing of Indrahar Pass (4,342 m), with the net elevation starting around ~2,130 m at Galu and finishing around ~2,260 m at Kuvarasi. Expect 3–4 days on trail for the point-to-point intent.

This is an expert-level undertaking because of the combination of altitude, long distance, and steep transitions. The ascent builds through alpine terrain and moraine-like ground, then ramps into a tougher, exposed section on the way to the pass. The trek’s pacing typically requires early starts and time buffers as weather shifts during the day.

The trail is described as moving through distinct ecological/tied-together terrain belts: start in forested country on the way up toward Triund/Laka, then work through harsher alpine ground as you approach and climb toward Indrahar Pass. Past the higher camps/locations, the route involves steep, rugged scrambling terrain on rocky scree/fractured rock rather than a gentle footpath.

Between Lahesh Cave and Indrahar Pass, the climb is especially demanding: the route rises steeply from Lahesh Cave (3,475 m) to the pass using cairn-guided lines through a steep rock maze. Winter-by-default trail logic doesn’t apply here—this is a summer-monsoon-prone environment where rain can make rock and footing significantly worse, so plan around exposed conditions on upper sections.

The pass itself arrives as a sudden cresting point marked by a small shrine and cairns/tridents in the deep notch on the Dhauladhar ridge. From Indrahar Pass, the line turns into a steep descent down the Chamba side toward Kuvarasi, following rugged trail down into the Kuvarasi settlement area.

For planning: the route is commonly run May through October, with July/August monsoon being the most problematic window due to rain and slippery conditions. Typical guidance is 31.8 miles (~51 km) for the route length, with a common expectation of around 3–4 days to complete the crossing.
