Garston Ski Hut

Garston Ski Hut is a historic, basic backcountry hut in the Hector Mountain Conservation Area of New Zealand, run by the Department of Conservation. It’s set at about 1,000 m and serves as a simple high-country base for hut-goers and mountain travelers who need a sheltered overnight stop.

Inside, the hut provides 8 bunk beds, with basic toilet facilities, plus a water tank (water is untreated). Use is free of bookings—stays are first come, first served.

Access is via Nevis Road from the Kingston-Garston Highway (about 6.5 km), and a 4WD vehicle is required to reach the access point. The access-road gate closes to motor vehicles in May and remains closed until after winter, then reopens once the seasonal closure ends.

For hut trips here, plan as if you’ll need your own sleeping mat and cooking setup, and bring adequate supplies. Backcountry conditions can change quickly, so strong navigation skills matter.
