Glenwood Horse Trail

Glenwood Horse Trail (FR 3053) is a long-distance hiking route in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, running along the Blue Ridge Parkway corridor between Natural Bridge Station and Camp Bethel. It’s an unmarked backcountry route carried by a mix of singletrack and older track roads used for multiple activities.

Most hiking on the Glenwood Horse Trail is focused on sections—day trips, point-to-point moves, and out-and-backs—because the full system spans well over a week’s hiking for many parties. The route is commonly approached as a network where you can string together connected footpaths into one longer line of travel.

Terrain is rugged and varied, with advanced character and a high level of effort; expect steep ridges and technical footing on harder segments. The route also features creek crossings and steep, rocky sections typical of Forest trails tied to the Blue Ridge Parkway drainage network.

Route surfaces are largely unpaved. On longer legs, you’ll alternate between dirt paths and more road-like tracks, with the trail setting shifting between singletrack sections and wider jeep-track stretches.

For navigation and planning, be ready for off-grid segments where route instructions and wayfinding can be limited. Expect the need for accurate topo navigation and enough time to move slower through technical stretches.

In practice, plan around a difficult hiking profile and long day ranges. A representative measured distance for one longer outing on this route is about 14.7 miles (23.6 km) with roughly 660 m of gain, showing the kind of climbing you can expect even on a partial section.
