Goodwin-Greene Hut
Goodwin-Greene Hut is a backcountry hut in the Elk Mountains, part of the Alfred A Braun Hut System managed by the 10th Mountain Division. It sleeps 10 people (3 doubles and 4 singles) in a one-level structure at about 11,680 ft and is set up for winter backcountry ski travel in a remote, avalanche-terrain environment.
Reservations are required, and the hut charges $320/night. The hut is equipped with a wood stove and a wood-fired oven, plus refrigeration; there’s an outhouse and a covered walkway, and no water service is provided—plan to melt snow for drinking water. A fire ring and grill aren’t provided, and there’s no sauna, no dogs, and no charging.
Winter gear and basics are built around self-sufficiency: bring your own water filter for snowmelt. Firewood, starter paper, matches, and axes are provided, along with solar-powered lighting, mattresses and pillows, toilet paper, and supplies for snow collection and melting.
Common access commonly starts from the Ashcroft trailhead, then follows routes up Express Creek and over Richmond Ridge. Another common approach is from Barnard Hut; planning is navigation-focused because routes to and between huts aren’t marked or maintained, and avalanche risk can create cancellation opportunities on the scheduled day.
