Hiking route

GR 221, also known as the Ruta de Pedra en Sec, is Mallorca’s long-distance dry-stone hiking route across the Serra de Tramuntana. It’s mapped here as a multi-day thru-hike covering about 135 km, typically broken into around 8–11 stages.

The route runs between Port d’Andratx and Port de Pollença, threading coastal sections and inland mountain trails. It’s designed as a mountain hike rather than a single-day walk, with total ascent commonly cited around 6,000 m depending on variations you take.

Expect a mix of historic paths and traditional routes through the Tramuntana mountains; the route character is strongly tied to dry-stone landscapes and restored old footpath networks. The highest point is given as Coll de ses Cases de sa Neu, just over 1,200 m.

For planning, the trail is commonly divided into stages that run roughly 13–24 km per day. That range fits a pace where you can deal with longer climbs and steep, rocky sections when they appear.

Logistics are a major part of GR 221: you typically use local lodging/refugios and overnight stays arranged along the way. Water can be sparse between villages in some stretches, so carrying enough and topping up in towns where you can is a key part of planning.

Seasonality matters on Mallorca’s long-distance trails: hiking is often recommended in spring and autumn to avoid peak summer heat, with many walkers choosing those shoulder seasons for comfortable day temperatures. The route is also frequently described as accessible enough to hike year-round, but the day-to-day conditions can change quickly in the mountains.
