GR 653D Via Domitia
GR 653D Via Domitia is a long-distance hiking route in southern France that follows the old Via Domitia Roman corridor. The way is signposted as a Grande Randonnée (GR 653D), with GR white-and-red markings in both directions (toward Santiago de Compostela / toward Rome).
Route scale is substantial: about 437 km mapped in this track (computed distance), and it’s typically completed in roughly 18–20 days when you walk daily with normal stage planning.
The route is framed as a Santiago de Compostela feeder: it’s used by walkers who connect into the broader pilgrim network. It traces a continuity from Alps-side access down into Provence rather than staying confined to one small region.
On the ground, expect an Alpine-to-Provence profile: significant elevation change in the higher sections near the start, then longer descents and easier ground as the route works its way toward the lower Provençal landscapes.
The long-distance character comes with sustained logistics. Along the GR, walker-oriented accommodation exists in the form of gîtes d’étape and small hotels designed for multi-day walkers, which is useful for building your own stage plan.
Season choice matters: the ideal window is late spring through early autumn, with summer heat in Provence often making it harder to hike comfortably. Higher-elevation sectors can remain affected by snow early in the season.
