Gray Knob is a backcountry cabin operated by Randolph Mountain Club on the north side of Mt. Adams, just below treeline. It sleeps up to 15 people and is run as a self-service overnight stop: you bring your own sleeping bag, food, cookware, and stove, and you’re responsible for your own safety.

The cabin has onsite mattresses for floor sleeping, a composting outhouse, and nearby spring water; the water is untreated, so treat or filter it. A wood stove is maintained by the caretaker only from roughly mid-September through early June, and it’s primarily for keeping the cabin dry (expect it won’t heat the interior to “comfortable” temperatures). Overnight fees are collected in the evening by the caretaker, with payment by cash or credit card.

Reserve process is first-come, first-served for camps; if you arrive when it’s full, be prepared to camp within U.S. Forest Service land-use regulations. Dogs are welcome, but they must be under voice control and you’ll need to clean up after them.
