Great Gulf Trail

Great Gulf Trail is a long-distance hiking route in New Hampshire’s White Mountain National Forest that climbs from the Great Gulf area toward Mount Washington. The route is built around the Great Gulf Headwall, with a much more sustained, technical upper section than typical Mount Washington approaches.

From the start, the lower portion follows the West Branch of the Peabody River, with multiple stream crossings and cascades along the way before you reach Spaulding Lake near the headwall. This first stretch is comparatively gentler, but it still sits in a primitive, remote setting.

Just past Spaulding Lake, the trail steepens abruptly into the Great Gulf Headwall climb. This section is described as a grueling scramble that gains about 2,000 feet in under a mile, and the route can become hard to track as the ascent steepens.

Navigation becomes more demanding in the headwall zone: blazes are reported to be absent higher up, with travel aided by rock cairns and careful route-finding. Expect rough, rocky terrain where route errors are costly.

At the top, the Great Gulf Trail ends at the connection with the Gulfside Trail. From there, you can complete a short link via the Trinity Heights Connector to reach the Mount Washington summit area.

Route scale is substantial for a day hike: about 13.5 miles out-and-back with an elevation gain around 4,639 feet and an estimated 8–9 hours for most hikers. It’s treated as extremely difficult/advanced in practice due to the headwall’s steep scrambling and navigation challenges.

Access involves the Great Gulf Trailhead on NH Route 16; a daily parking fee is cited for the Great Gulf Wilderness Parking Lot. Plan for limited ability to self-rescue in remote terrain and for the reality that descent can be as hazardous as the climb for many parties.
