Grinnell Glacier Trail

Grinnell Glacier Trail in Glacier National Park is a famous, strenuous out-and-back hike built around the Many Glacier area. The route length is about 10.6 miles round trip with roughly 1,600 feet of elevation gain, so the day is mostly about sustained uphill work rather than technical climbing.

Most hikers start from the Many Glacier side near Swiftcurrent Lake/“Lake Josephine” access, then follow the trail system up toward Grinnell Glacier. The early walking on the lake corridor is comparatively easier before the route begins gaining more noticeably as it leaves the flatter sections behind.

A common way to reduce distance is to use the Glacier Park Boat Company shuttle across Swiftcurrent Lake and Lake Josephine, cutting the hike to about 7.2 miles round trip. The boat option also changes what you’ll walk on the front end by skipping some lakeside mileage.

From the lake area junctions, the route becomes the push toward Grinnell Glacier: a long climb with multiple splits/junction choices that ultimately keep you aimed at the farthest destination. Near the upper portion, the gain concentrates and the tread becomes steeper with rocky switchbacks as you work toward the glacier viewpoint area.

The upper approach is highlighted by a steep, rocky climb in the last part of the route; many hikers treat this as the hardest segment of the day. Once you reach Grinnell Glacier, you’re at the destination viewpoint for the hike’s payoff.

Grinnell Glacier Trail is exposed in its later stages, so timing matters—late June through September is the typical snow-free window. Early-season conditions can still bring snow into higher/exposed sections, which can make footing significantly harder and riskier.

This is a high-use hike in peak season, and wildlife encounters are part of the reality of the route. Plan for wildlife and follow park guidance for distance from bears and other large animals; carry bear spray and stay alert on the trail.
