Hannegan Pass Trail
Hannegan Pass Trail (Trail 674) is a one-way hike to Hannegan Pass (about 4 miles) with elevation gain of about +2,000 ft. The first mile is fairly level with intermittent forest, then the next 2.5 miles shift into a gentle climb through Mt. Baker Wilderness, with the Ruth Creek Valley becoming more visible as the trail only briefly enters small forest patches.
The Ruth Mountain profile shows up after the first mile, and open views run for long stretches until about mile 3. Early-season conditions often include waterfalls and occasional avalanche cascades dropping from the steep cliffs of Mt. Sefrit and the Nooksack Ridge to the south.
About a half mile below Hannegan Pass is the turnoff to Hannegan Camp at roughly 4,680 ft. To continue to the pass, stay left and climb via steep switchbacks through sub-alpine forest before reaching the signed junction for Hannegan Peak Trail 674.1.
At Hannegan Pass, the trail connects to Hannegan Peak Trail 674.1, which climbs about 1,200 ft in roughly one mile to the summit of Hannegan Peak. The junction area also functions as the start of the popular Copper Ridge loop, and the route drops about 650 ft in a mile toward North Cascades National Park.
North Cascades National Park rules apply once the route enters the park; pets and goats are prohibited beyond that point. There’s no potable water noted for the trail, and backcountry toilets are available at Hannegan Camp and at Hannegan Pass.
Trail 674 is open to hikers and llamas year-round; stock is open July 1–Oct. 31. Campfires are not allowed, and overnight use in North Cascades National Park requires a backcountry permit (available via the Glacier Public Service Center).
A valid Recreation Pass must be displayed at the Hannegan Pass Trailhead fee site (the Washington State Discover Pass is not accepted at Forest Service fee sites).
Mapped for long-distance hiking as a short hiking-specific member route in the Mt. Baker–Snoqualmie National Forest, with a ground surface and foot designation.
