Haskell Hut
Haskell Hut is a winter-use backcountry wilderness hut in Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument. It’s accessed by a hike in summer or by ski/snowshoe in winter, covering about 5.5 miles from the north entrance, typically along an old logging road with gentle ups and downs.
Use is reservation-based for winter stays, with reservations available from mid-January to mid-March each year. The hut sleeps up to 8 people and includes 6 beds on sleeping platforms, plus a woodstove with split wood kept outside.
Facilities are primitive: there is no electricity or lighting, no potable water or running water (bring/filter water), and there’s no trash service. Plan on packing out everything you bring in, and follow Leave No Trace; pit toilets with toilet paper are provided nearby. The hut includes limited cookware, and you should bring your own sleeping bags and sleeping pads, plus a cook stove, fuel, and all provisions.
The winter trail to the hut is generally packed and groomed weekly for cross-country skiing during the season, but the huts and trails aren’t patrolled and there’s no cell service. Establish your own emergency plan and be ready for self-sufficiency, including carrying maps and a satellite communication device.
