Healy Pass Trail

Healy Pass Trail is a classic Banff National Park day hike between the Sunshine Village area and Healy Pass (out-and-back via the same route). The day starts with a wide, gently climbing tread through dense forest along Healy Creek before the route strengthens and you work up toward open alpine meadows.

Early on, the trail stays in the trees with a steady uphill. You cross Healy Creek and pass short seasonal waterways and small clearings before the forest begins to thin, setting up the longer push into meadow terrain.

By mid-route, the landscape transitions from forest to open alpine meadows. This is where the route typically feels less obstructed and the climb becomes more directly exposed to alpine weather.

The top is reached after roughly 9.5–9.7 km one-way (about 18.3–19.5 km round trip depending on pacing/route details). At the pass, you get a high, panoramic look out toward Egypt Lake and surrounding peaks, including the distinctive Mount Assiniboine.

Healy Pass is especially known for autumn color when larch trees turn golden and when the larch meadows open up along the upper approach. In early season it’s more often associated with the wildflower phase, when the alpine meadows green up.

Practical logistics: the trailhead is accessed from behind the Sunshine Village lower gondola area. Total hiking time is commonly in the 5.5–7 hour range for a same-day out-and-back.

Wildlife and season conditions matter here: the area is prime bear habitat, and trail surfaces around the pass can get very muddy and icy in fall. Mosquitoes can be heavy near the lakes at the top, so plan for long bug pressure in warm months.
