Hemlocks and Hardwoods Trail
Hemlocks and Hardwoods Trail is a 5 km loop hike in Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site. Expect a route built around an old-growth hemlock stand, with a cooler, darker, moist feel under the dense canopy.
A raised hemlock boardwalk takes you over the most sensitive root areas of the “giants,” so you stay out of the ground while passing through the core forest.
The trail transitions through forest types as you loop—starting in younger hardwood/pine growth, then settling into the tall conifer hemlock environment before turning back to where you began.
Time on trail is typically about 1 to 1.5 hours for the loop. The outing is listed as easy, with minimal elevation change.
A practical access point for the loop is the Big Dam Road parking lot area, from which the walk proceeds to the trail’s start and loop circuit.
Trail management at Kejimkujik emphasizes staying on designated trails/boardwalks to protect fragile vegetation and roots; dogs are required to be leashed.
