Highline Trail #114
Highline Trail #114 is a west-to-east long hiking route around the north side of Mt. Adams in Mt. Adams Wilderness (Gifford Pinchot National Forest). It runs between Pacific Crest Trail #2000 and the Yakama Reservation boundary near the Devils Gardens, and it rises in elevation from about 6,000 ft to nearly 7,800 ft.
The trail is open to hikers and equestrians. Total mapped hiking distance is about 12.87 km (~5.3 miles one way), with a mix of forest walking and alpine meadow terrain as you gain elevation.
The first stretch begins on Pacific Crest Trail #2000, about 1.2 miles north of Killen Creek Trail #113. From there to Foggy Flat the tread is described as a frequent up-and-down “roller coaster” over the terrain rather than a smooth contouring walk.
As you approach and cross the Muddy Fork system, expect glacial meltwater crossings. The two branches are formed by glacial meltwater, and crossings can be difficult—especially in the afternoon when meltwater volume is greatest.
Seasonality matters: low-elevation trails typically melt out by mid-May, while higher sections usually clear by mid-July. Snow can persist on north-facing slopes, and the route can have downed trees, washouts, and/or landslides.
Use a wilderness-permit workflow before you go. Wilderness permits are required for Gifford Pinchot National Forest wilderness entry (free/self-issued at trailheads or ranger stations), and a Mt. Adams Climbing Pass is required for travel above 7,000 ft between May 1 and Sept. 30. Campfires are prohibited above 6,000 ft, with specific campfire restriction boundaries tying to Round-The-Mountain Trail #9, Pacific Crest Trail #2000, and Highline Trail #114.
Be ready for water management along the route: backcountry creeks and streams may dry out, so carry enough for the gaps you expect. If you’re planning a trip that reaches higher elevations and the Yakama Reservation-managed segment, note that areas outside Tract D on the Yakama side are closed to the public and Tract D is subject to closure.
