Hiking route

Hog Rock Loop Trail is a moderate, yellow-blazed hiking route in Catoctin Mountain Park. It forms a loop around the park’s Hog Rock area and ties into the park’s other yellow-loop system.

The loop is about 4.5 miles with roughly 2,369 feet of elevation gain. Expect a mix of climbing and descending, rather than a steady grade throughout.

The Hog Rock portion is specifically known as the park’s highest vista stop, accessed on a short spur nature extension from the loop. The nature extension is the Hog Rock Nature Trail, blazed yellow triangle.

Typical hike time is about 2.5 to 4 hours depending on pace. For planning, assume you’ll spend more time on the uphill sections and the rocky footing near vista areas.

Common logistics: use the Hog Rock parking area (or the Thurmont Vista parking area) along Park Central Road to reach the trail system. Winter closures can affect which parking areas and access routes are open.

If you bring pets, note that pets are not permitted on the rock formations at Hog Rock (and also at Wolf Rock and Chimney Rock).

On the Hog Rock Loop Trail, plan for uneven, rocky footing near the vistas and be ready for slippery rock sections; use caution in those areas.
