Homestead Hunters Hut
Homestead Hunters Hut is a basic four-bunk hut in the Stewart Island/Rakiura area, used for hunters’ trips in Stewart Island/Rakiura hunting blocks and Rakiura National Park. The hut is owned and maintained by the Rakiura Hunter Camp Trust and is for public use, but it’s designed for very basic shelter with limited facilities and services.
The hut has multi-fuel burners, mattresses, a toilet with a pit latrine disposal system, and an axe or saw plus a broom and dust pan. Water is rainwater stored in a tank (1000 litres) but it is untreated, so you need to boil it before drinking. Bookings are required and are handled through the Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre; the stay is charged at $30 per person for the length of stay (up to 10 days). The hut was built in 2008 by Southland Deerstalkers’ Association members and others, and it includes water-boil and “very basic shelter” expectations—bring what you need for your own cooking since cooking options and utensils are not provided.
