Huayhuash Circuit
Huayhuash Circuit is a multi-day alpine hiking loop in Peru’s Cordillera Huayhuash, mapped here as a circuit trekking route of 118.8 km. It’s built around repeated high passes and long days at altitude, with most of the walking staying above the treeline.
The terrain is rugged and pass-focused: the route crosses numerous mountain passes and links remote valleys and glacial-lake basins around the Cordillera Huayhuash massif. Expect high, cold camps and sustained exposure typical of advanced high-elevation trekking.
Timing matters. Trekking is typically done during the dry season from May through September, when travel is more predictable for high passes and cold nights. This is also the period when most itineraries schedule acclimatization and the main loop.
Altitude is the central challenge. The Cordillera Huayhuash trekking corridor is generally characterized by camps and walking largely above 4,000 m tree line, and the circuit is commonly treated as a serious acclimatization-dependent expedition rather than a casual multi-day hike.
The circuit is known as a demanding alternative to other famous Peruvian long-distance treks, with a full-loop format (the whole Huayhuash Circuit) generally run on the order of ~10–14 days depending on variant. Many trekkers plan pre-trek time in Huaraz before starting the loop, using additional day walks to condition for high passes.
Management of the route differs from classic park systems: the circuit passes through farming communities and logistics/camping access typically involve local community arrangements rather than a single enclosed national-park trail corridor.
Wildlife and high-Andes ecosystems are part of the trekking context for the Huayhuash range, which is protected as the Cordillera Huayhuash Reserved Zone; the range is known for glacial lakes and high-elevation puna landscapes that dominate the trekking environment.
