Hugh Norris Trail

Hugh Norris Trail is a long out-and-back hike in Saguaro National Park West that climbs to the Wasson Peak area. The route is typically treated as moderate overall, but the early and upper sections are steep enough that the hike rewards a steady pace and good climbing legs.

Access lines up with the Bajada Loop Drive area: the trailhead is along Hohokam Road, off the unpaved shoulder near a small parking area and a trail register. From there, the path heads into a saguaro-and-cholla landscape and commits to a steep switchbacked ascent before the grade eases.

After the initial climb, the trail trends along a ridge for miles, alternating between more manageable hiking and renewed climbing. Expect a sustained “mountain-side” feel with lots of steps on steeper grades and frequent contact with boulders and dense cactus growth.

Around the mid-hike area, Hugh Norris intersects Sendero Esperanza Trail near a saddle. From that junction, staying on Hugh Norris continues the climb toward the Wasson Peak Trail and the final ridge push.

The upper portion becomes rockier as the trail approaches the Wasson Peak summiting area. The last stretch runs along a final ridge segment and finishes near the top of Wasson Peak, the high point reached on this route.

Season matters: late spring to early fall can be very hot in the lower reaches, so planning for cooler months helps. The route is also commonly described as suitable during fall through spring, with summer heat being the biggest limiter for comfort and safety.
