Illinois River Trail

Illinois River Trail (#1161) is a long-distance hiking route in the north end of the Kalmiopsis Wilderness on Rogue River–Siskiyou National Forest, running through the Illinois Wild and Scenic River corridor area between Oak Flat at the east end (near Briggs Creek/Agness area) and Oak Flat at the west end (near Agness, Oregon).

This is a fairly difficult, rugged trail—especially near Bald Mountain—with the route alternating between river-canyon terrain and drier forest segments. Late May through July is a common bloom window for wildflowers, while higher elevations like Bald Mountain can be snowed in during winter even when lower elevations remain accessible within about 10 miles of either trailhead.

Most hikers plan it as a traverse (shuttle) or as an in-and-out backpack from one trailhead. A typical through-hike is about 27–30 miles end to end, with the most demanding climbing centered around crossing and descending Bald Mountain.

Trailhead-to-trailhead planning can be built around the established camping areas along the route and the interconnecting side trails. Potable water is not available; treat surface water, and plan for limited sources on Bald Mountain compared with lower-elevation sections.

Route management and access rules matter here: the Gold Beach Ranger District’s portion on the west end was designated as a National Recreation Trail, the corridor has Wilderness restrictions, and camping/travel may be more complex in post-fire areas due to downed material and unmarked junctions in places.

Motor vehicle access is limited to the trailheads; under travel management rules, the Illinois River Trail (from Oak Flat to the old Fantz Ranch) is open to motorcycles from September 15 through May 15, while no motorized or mechanized equipment like mountain bikes is allowed past Fantz Ranch or within Kalmiopsis Wilderness. Campfire use is restricted within the Illinois River Wild and Scenic corridor to devices like a firepan.
