Indian Pass Trail

Indian Pass Trail is a historical hiking route in the Adirondack Mountains that connects the Adirondack Loj area to the Upper Works Trailhead near Newcomb, with the route passing through Indian Pass toward Summit Rock and the Wallface Mountain cliff line.

This is a long-distance day hike in the 10–12 mile point-to-point range (depending on where you start and finish), and it carries a moderate overall difficulty—while the upper pass sections are far more intense than the easier lower approaches.

Expect the hardest terrain in the upper reach: large boulders, hands-on scrambling, and multiple ladders. The pass area also stays wet longer and can feel much less sunlit than lower trail sections, so traction can be poor when it’s damp.

Trail markings are split by direction: on the Adirondack Loj side you’ll follow red disks, and on the Upper Works side you’ll follow yellow disks.

The route follows a path and ground surface and includes features you’ll need to manage on foot—water crossings and trail junctions—plus lean-to areas such as Wallface lean-to and Henderson lean-to on the way through the wilderness corridor.

If you’re planning a longer outing, the trail corridor supports hiking beyond a quick turnaround: you can push farther toward Summit Rock and then continue connecting onward from there, using nearby trail connections if your itinerary goes past the pass destination.
