International Appalachian Trail Quebec
International Appalachian Trail Quebec (IAT‑QC / GR A1), a long-distance trek of about 631–650 km that runs across Québec’s Gaspé Peninsula.
The route is set up for multi-day hiking; a complete thru-hike typically takes roughly 35–45 days, while 1–3 day section trips are a common way to tackle it.
Expect major elevation work as the trail crosses the Chic‑Choc and McGerrigle mountain ranges and pushes into alpine country in Parc national de la Gaspésie.
A classic “three acts” feel is built into the itinerary: starting in Matapédia and the Matapédia Valley area, then moving through the higher mountain landscapes, and finally descending toward the sea and culminating at Forillon National Park.
The coastal approach follows the maritime edge from village to village down toward Forillon, where the final character becomes oceanfront cliffs.
Seasonality matters: the route is generally most dependable from late June through September/into October, with lingering snow possible on higher peaks earlier in June.
Lodging is a core part of the plan, with huts, shelters (including lean-tos), and tent platforms distributed along the corridor, alongside options for self-guided or guided packages on shorter itineraries.
Access and use are managed through day-access rules in some sections and paid park access where the route enters Parc national de la Gaspésie and Forillon National Park; reservations are required for huts and campsites.
