Jubiläumsweg/via Alpina

Jubiläumsweg/via Alpina is a hard long-distance hiking route in the Allgäu Alps, following the Germany–Austria border corridor. It’s used as a challenging segment of the international Via Alpina Red Trail.

The route climbs quickly into high-alpine terrain and is rated difficult: expect sustained elevation gain (about +1000 m to +1370 m depending on the exact start point) and several secured sections with steel ropes where exposure and footing are serious factors.

A typical waypoint on this route is Schrecksee, an isolated alpine lake that you’ll pass on the way toward the route’s key mountain-hut base at Prinz-Luitpold-Haus.

Practical logistics are part of the challenge: the trail is point-to-point, and transport planning for your start and finish trailheads matters. Accommodation is centered on Prinz-Luitpold-Haus (and you’ll plan around it rather than relying on the route for day stops).

Water planning is essential. There are no natural water sources or huts directly on the Jubiläumsweg itself, so carry enough for your full day (or segment) rather than expecting on-trail replenishment.

Season is time-critical in the high Alps. The hiking window is typically mid-July to mid-September; outside that period, snow can block higher passes and hut operations may not be available.
