Jumbo Pass Hut

Jumbo Pass Hut is a backcountry wilderness hut operated by the Columbia Valley Hut Society on the ridge along the Purcell divide, about 0.5 km north of Jumbo Pass. The cabin was built in September 1997 (replacing an older, smaller hut) and sits at 2350 m (7710'). It sleeps 6 comfortably with a maximum of 8 (in 2 double bunks and the loft floor), with mattresses, cookware, a propane stove, and a lantern provided; bring 1 lb propane canisters.

Use is heavily reservation-driven: the hut is booked about 95% of the year and reservations are very competitive. Maximum stay is 4 nights, and hut access & conditions can change—check the operator’s important access updates before heading out. Firewood is not provided in summer; during winter, use firewood sparingly and note that bonfires are prohibited due to the sensitive subalpine ecosystem.

Jumbo Pass Hut is used for quality hiking, scrambling, and ski touring in a small alpine setting. A nearby tarn just east of the cabin serves as the summer drinking water source. Expect demand not only from hut users but also from day users and tent campers, especially on summer weekends.

Access is by non-motorized trail, with drive directions that vary by season and roadside parking that depends on funding and local logging activity. For summer travelers, traditional parking is at the 15.4 km mark on the Jumbo Creek Road; winter access generally reaches the end of the plowed portion at the Toby Creek/Jumbo Creek junction. From either the East Kootenay or West Kootenays side, typical hiking time is 2.5–3 hours in summer and ski touring can take up to 6.5 hours in winter depending on conditions.
