Junction Burn Hut

Junction Burn Hut is a Department of Conservation standard 12-bunk hut in Fiordland National Park (western Fiordland). It’s accessed from the middle arm of Lake Te Anau and is used as a backcountry base for walkers working in the Murchison mountains protected-takahē area.

Use is first come, first served—no standard bookings are required—but you must buy a Standard Hut Ticket for each night and place it in the honesty box at the hut (or use a Backcountry Hut Pass). Fees are listed for adults, youth, and children/infants, with rates to 30 June 2026 and updated rates from 1 July 2026. The hut has a fireplace, mattresses, and drinking water described as untreated, plus toilets with pit latrine disposal.

Access to the entry area is permit-only for December to February, and there are freshwater-pest precautions for visitors on waterways in the Fiordland National Park area (including Lake Te Anau and related waterways): take care to avoid transporting didymo and follow clean/checked gear practices before moving between waterways.
