Kandik River Public Use Cabin

Kandik River Public Use Cabin is a National Park Service backcountry cabin in Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve, Alaska, on the west bank at the mouth of the Kandik River. It’s one of the preserve’s public use cabins and is approached on foot via a trail from the riverbank area around the Kandik River mouth’s west bank.

The cabin sleeps 2 comfortably and has a 5-person maximum. Use is on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservation system. Use is free, but park rules apply, including removing personal property and trash when you leave; if you plan to stay longer than 10 days in a 30-day period, you may need a permit or prior arrangement with the superintendent.

The cabin includes a wood stove; firewood management is part of cabin policy (split wood and replace what you use). Historical notes on the cabin include construction in 1981 (as the Ricketts-Trainor Cabin) and rebuilding in 2010 after destruction during the breakup flood of May 2009. Because some cabins in the preserve may be affected by damage from prior floods, check current conditions/alerts for which cabins are open and what inspection may be required before you travel.
