Kapatagan Trail
Kapatagan Trail (also called Paradise Trail) is a demanding long-distance approach route up Mount Apo from Davao del Sur, in Mindanao. It’s used as a classic multi-day climb and concentrates effort on the steep volcanic-rock sections near the crater area.
Typical jump-off is Sitio Paradise or De Sander in Kapatagan. The route starts through farmlands and quickly transitions into dense mossy forest, with continuous climbing and frequent muddy/uneven footing as you gain elevation.
Most itineraries break the effort into two main days of hiking: a first-day push to reach the Gudi-Gudi area, then a midnight-to-early-morning summit push aimed at being on the upper slopes for sunrise at the boulders/upper volcanic-rock terrain.
On the second day, the character shifts from forest travel to steep, rope-assisted scrambling over volcanic rock. The route also includes a rest/readjustment area at White Sand before the final steep push toward the crater and the peaks.
Because Mount Apo is protected and closely managed, access is regulated through permits and batch limits. Plans are usually handled through accredited organizers, including ID handling and logistics for guides and porters.
The route is hard by hiking standards: expect a physically demanding ascent profile and very cold temperatures at elevation, with summit conditions described as alpine-like on Mount Apo’s top. Base camping is commonly at Gudi-Gudi for the first night, then at a second camp during the summit approach.
