Kaweka Flats Bivouac
Kaweka Flats Bivouac is a Department of Conservation bivvy at Kaweka Forest Park (Hawke’s Bay), set in a clearing at the base of Dicks Spur. It’s reached after about 1 hour from the Makahu carpark and is a straightforward target for a day out, weekend stay, or the start of a longer tramp; the track leaves from behind the bivouac and continues onward past it to Middle Hill Hut and then down toward Makahu Road.
The bivouac has 2 bunk beds and uses a stream-water supply; drinking water is not specifically flagged, so treat water as backcountry supplies. There’s a long-drop style toilet (pit latrine). Basic/bivvies bookings aren’t required—use is first come, first served. Built in 1963 by the NZ Forest Service, it sits at about 900 metres above sea level and is typically set up with camping space around the bivouac.
