Hiking route

Kepler Track is a 60 km loop Great Walk in Fiordland National Park near Te Anau, designed as a 3–4 day tramping route. It’s usually done as a medium-grade hike, with an exposed alpine day running along ridgelines between Luxmore Hut and Iris Burn Hut.

A practical way to stage it is the standard hut sequence: Lake Te Anau control area to Luxmore Hut on Day 1, Luxmore Hut to Iris Burn Hut on Day 2, then Iris Burn Hut to Moturau Hut on Day 3, finishing with Moturau Hut to Rainbow Reach on Day 4 (or reversing the order).

Day 1 starts with beech-forested lake walking along Lake Te Anau before the route climbs toward Luxmore Hut via limestone bluffs and higher tussock country. There’s a short side trip from Luxmore Hut to Luxmore Cave (about 20 minutes return from the hut).

Day 2 is the key alpine traverse: you climb above Luxmore Hut to a ridge just below Mount Luxmore (highest point on the main trail is Luxmore Saddle at 1,400 m), then work along exposed ridgelines near the summit zone before descending through forest to Iris Burn Hut, which sits in a tussock clearing.

Between Iris Burn and Moturau, the track heads down through forest and across river flats and gorge terrain, with a section that passes near a large slip formed by heavy rain in January 1984. It then comes out on the shores of Lake Manapouri to reach Moturau Hut.

The final leg from Moturau Hut to Rainbow Reach is comparatively easy walking across a fragile wetland and follows the Waiau River to the swing bridge at Rainbow Reach, where transport back to Te Anau is available.

This route is in the Great Walks season (late October to late April) for the best facilities and fewer hazards; outside that period, cold and wet conditions can include ice, snow, and shorter daylight. Huts and campsites on the track require advance bookings in the Great Walks season, and shelters at Forest Burn and Hanging Valley are not for overnight use.

Wet-weather sensitivity matters: several sections involve exposure and alpine terrain, so when rain, wind, or rapid weather changes roll in, plan conservative timing and ensure you’re carrying the gear to stay warm and dry; start early on days that include the alpine ridgeline. Also note that alpine areas and the Iris Burn area have kea, so secure food and gear to reduce damage risk. Buckets/boardwalking is used in some boggy spots, but don’t assume the surface will be stable in heavy rain.
