K'gari Great Walk

K'gari Great Walk is the long-distance walking track on K'gari (formerly Fraser Island) in Queensland, Australia, running about 90 km one-way and typically completed in 6 to 8 days.

The standard route goes from Dilli Village to Happy Valley (or reverse). Hikers traverse mostly at sea level, with generally mild elevation changes but sustained effort on soft sand underfoot.

The walk is built around self-sufficiency: carry enough water and plan for fully independent camping between official walker camps rather than relying on day-to-day supplies.

Route country shifts through coastal heathland, mangrove forest, woodland, and subtropical rainforest, with long stretches suited to multi-day camping and side walks branching off the main line.

Lakes are a central feature of the Great Walk system. The route passes multiple perched freshwater lakes, including Lake McKenzie and Lake Boomanjin (described as the world’s largest perched lake).

Between camp nights, expect a mix of forest sections and dune/sand environments, including the northern Valley of the Giants section and the Central Station area used as a common midpoint on the Great Walk itinerary.

Bookings matter: Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service provides 8 walkers’ camps along the track, and a booking is essential for staying overnight.

K'gari is managed with safety and wildlife rules in mind—hikers should plan for native dingoes by storing food and scented items in the metal dingo-proof boxes provided at designated campsites.

The track is rated easy to moderate on one difficulty framing, while other route grading places it in a moderate-to-challenging class; either way, it’s best approached with decent fitness for multi-day walking on sand.
