Lake Minnewanka Trail

Lake Minnewanka Trail is a long Banff National Park lakeside hiking route that follows the north shore area of Lake Minnewanka from the Lake Minnewanka parking lot. The route is straightforward in character—forest walking and lake-edge tread—with an overall length of about 19.92 km for the full tracked hike.

Typical day-hike planning is built around turnaround points: many hikers stop at the Stewart Canyon Bridge or at the Aylmer Lookout junction rather than committing to the entire shoreline length. Expect most of the work to come from distance rather than sustained steep climbing.

Terrain is generally low-to-moderate grade with minimal elevation gain, but footing can be uneven. Rooty/rocky sections are part of the experience, so traction and careful steps matter, especially when the surface is wet or during shoulder-season conditions.

The trail runs through prime grizzly bear habitat, so Parks Canada has a seasonal restriction window from July 10 to September 15. During this period, all hiking parties must travel in a minimum group size of four, keep people close (within 3 metres, or less with reduced sight/hearing), and carry bear spray at all times.

Restrictions also extend beyond group size: beyond Stewart Canyon Bridge, cycling is not permitted and dogs are not permitted. The Lake Minnewanka seasonal restriction also covers the Lake Minnewanka Trail segment from Stewart Canyon Bridge to the East Park Boundary, plus Aylmer Pass and Aylmer Lookout trails.

As a practical logistics note, the Lake Minnewanka parking lot is the standard starting point for this hike, reached via Lake Minnewanka Road just north of the Town of Banff. A typical trip window cited for a standard day hike is about 4 to 5 hours, with longer times if you push farther up toward Aylmer Lookout.
