Hiking route

Lemei Trail #34 is a long-distance point-to-point hiking route in Indian Heaven Wilderness (Gifford Pinchot National Forest) within Washington’s Cascades. The route is about 5.4 miles one-way, with roughly 1,500 ft to 2,000+ ft of elevation gain depending on where you turn around.

From the Lemei Trailhead off Forest Road 24, the trail heads due west and climbs steadily up toward a ridge line. It then intersects the short Lake Wapiki spur, Lake Wapiki Trail #34A, about 3 miles from the trailhead.

Near mid-route, Lake Wapiki Trail #34A drops down to Lake Wapiki for a close-in connection to the Wapiki Basin. From there, the main #34 continues climbing toward meadows and rocky slopes.

Expect the #34 route to steepen after the Wapiki connection, with travel past subalpine terrain and rocky scree. After passing beneath Lemei Rock (the area’s highest point), the trail trends downhill toward the Indian Heaven Trail #33 junction near Cultus Lake.

The summit of Lemei Rock is reachable via a short off-trail scramble up a scree chute on the northeast side of the peak; no technical climbing is required, but loose rock is a key factor for traction and footing.

Trail character is built around hiking and equestrian use on the wilderness path network; the #34A connector and the Indian Heaven Trail #33 junctions allow multiple ways to combine loops in the Indian Heaven Wilderness trail system. Wilderness permits and standard wilderness regulations apply.
