Limestone Bike Trail #100:8 / Sheltowee Trace #100

This route is Limestone Bike Trail #100:8 on the Sheltowee Trace National Recreation Trail, using the same corridor as “The Ridge” segment in the Daniel Boone National Forest near Morehead/Cave Run Lake, Kentucky.

Expect a long out-and-back hike character: a steady, relentless climb starting from the Cave Run Lake Dam/visitor-area area, then a rolling ridge traverse afterward toward a junction with the Big Limestone Trail.

The climb and overall effort run in the “moderate” range for sustained hiking—about 580 ft of gain and roughly 3.5 miles one-way (distance can shift depending on which loop/connector points you include).

Route conditions in this corridor tend to drain well, so it’s generally hikeable across more seasons than a wet, mud-prone trail—though the ridge traverse can still feel exposed to the effort of a continuous grade.

On the ridge section, the walking alternates between rises and dips along a forested, rolling line; views of Cave Run Lake are limited rather than guaranteed, but the ridge walk is the point of the segment.

Notable route features on this section include Limestone Knob along the way and a swinging bridge that can appear on many route variations.

This segment is used as a multi-use trail corridor (hikers, mountain bikes, and trail runners share it), so be ready to manage encounters on narrower stretches and at junctions.
