Listvyanka - Bolshie Koty (Great Baikal Trail)

Listvyanka to Bolshiye Koty is the named Listvyanka—Bolshiye Koty section of the Great Baikal Trail, running along the western shore of Lake Baikal on hiking track (no vehicle access to Bolshiye Koty). The route is mapped as about 17.6 km and is generally categorized as easy for long-distance trekking.

The terrain is a mix of forested hiking and coastal walking: the trail crosses through taiga/wooded sections, then alternates between hills above the shore and open ground farther along the route. There are also pebble-beach/coast segments, with enough steep spots on the shoreline to keep you alert on foot.

Timing-wise, this is typically done as a one-way walk with a boat return option back to Listvyanka; ferry service is seasonal and most active in summer. Many hikers plan their transport in advance because you’re connecting to Bolshiye Koty, which has no roads and is reached by boat rather than vehicle.

Because much of the route sits inside Pribaikalsky National Park, a hiking permit/registration is required for park access. The permit is handled locally in the Irkutsk area (including a ranger/office option in Listvyanka), and documentation has been reported as quick to obtain when you’re there to get it.

If you hike in the main warm season, plan for insects (including ticks and mosquitoes) and expect the wooded first part of the walk to reduce convenient water access. Bring enough water for the hike and use insect protection; tick/mosquito pressure is specifically flagged during peak spring/summer months.

Effort-wise, even when the overall rating is “easy,” expect a long day: the route typically takes roughly half a day to a full day (often quoted as 5–8 hours depending on pace and conditions). The mapped path includes sections marked as uphill (incline=yes), so pack for steady walking rather than a flat stroll.
