Los Burros Trail #631
Los Burros Trail #631 is a long-distance loop hike in Arizona’s White Mountains on the White Mountain Trail System. USFS management notes it as an ideal option for hotter summer conditions because many sections run shaded, and the hike stays in mixed conifer/ponderosa pine terrain at high elevation.
Route scale is typically a moderate outing in the ~13 to 14.5 mile range, with an alternate shorter loop option of roughly ~8 to 10 miles. Expect about 1,300 ft of elevation gain on the longer loop version.
The loop starts from the far end of Los Burros Campground. The campground is the former Los Burros Ranger Station site, with historic buildings on the property, and it’s the practical staging point for multiple trail loops in the area.
Follow the route using tree markers; it’s described as a bit of a labyrinth, so navigation matters. Blue diamond/tags on the trees are the key indicator for staying on the correct loop.
Most loop options pass through stands of aspen and ponderosa pine. A commonly mentioned highlight route add-on is Lake Mountain Lookout as a side trip from along the system.
High-elevation timing matters: the trail’s shade makes it a better summer bet, but the route still benefits from standard preparedness for mountain weather changes. If rain is in the forecast or recent, scout the route before committing—water and damp ground can make foot travel on dirt paths less stable, especially around junctions where you’re relying on markers.
Camping logistics are straightforward but basic: Los Burros Campground is primitive and has no potable water. Use the campground restrooms, plan water well ahead of time, and pack out everything you bring in.
