L.O.S.T. Trail #221

L.O.S.T. Trail #221 (Legends of Superior Trails) is a mapped long-distance hiking route in the Sonoran Desert around Superior, Arizona, inside Tonto National Forest. The route is built from member trail segments (ref. 221) and is mapped along path corridors (highway=path).

Expect mostly moderate hiking terrain shaped by canyon washes and desert flats, including sections that hug canyon walls and pass through open meadow-like areas. The mapped distance for the #221 segment is about 5.05 km (3.1 mi).

A common use case for route planning is as part of the Picketpost Loop Trail, where L.O.S.T. Trail #221 is used to circle the base area of Picket Post Mountain. The loop is typically timed at about 3.5–4 hours, depending on pace and stops.

Navigation and conditions matter here: the route gets very limited shade, and there’s no guarantee of cool, shaded footing for extended stretches. Treat sun exposure as a primary constraint when you pick your start time.

Water planning is critical on this desert hiking line. Plan to carry significantly more water than you think you’ll need, since water sources are scarce and the route’s open terrain offers limited relief from heat.

Wildlife and cattle can be present on and near the route corridor, especially around water tanks and open areas—plan to keep your group moving and avoid leaving gear or food unattended.
