Major Clews Hut

Major Clews Hut is a historic mud-brick mountain hut in western Kosciuszko National Park near Khancoban, used as an emergency backcountry shelter. It was built in the late 1950s as a residence for Major Clews, a surveyor for the Snowy Mountains Scheme, and the hut is currently unstaffed and used for day-use and refuge on a first-come, first-served basis.

Access is from the Major Clews Hut trail, a steep, unsealed track that is affected by seasonal closures and can become boggy after rain. The approach includes a small creek crossing and is generally not suitable for 2WD vehicles; the trail can also be used by mountain bikes. Carry your own camping gear—there is no booking system for overnight use of the hut itself.
