Manuel Peak Trail

Manuel Peak Trail is a long-distance hiking route in Big Sur that runs from Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park up to Manuel Peak and back. It’s a steep, sustained climb from the Big Sur Valley floor toward a ridge separating the Big Sur Valley from the South Fork Little Sur Valley, with enough brush, exposure, and route-finding friction that you should treat it as a serious outing, not a casual walk.

The route runs through scrub and coastal chaparral, and conditions frequently shift as you go—open, sage-heavy stretches give way to wooded sections where vegetation can cross the line and make the tread feel intermittent. Near and beyond the summit area, dense chaparral and hard-to-read trail segments are common enough that you’ll want good navigation habits.

Expect long sections to be sun-exposed; parts of the route are described as being roughly 90% exposed to direct sun. Pair that with steep terrain and the lack of reliable shade and you’ll want to plan around heat rather than only air temperature.

Trail quality varies. In some seasons it’s passable with tall grass early and overgrowth later; in other conditions it can be sketchy with washed-out tread in specific upper portions. The practical takeaway: after wet weather, the upper trail can be rough and you should scout ahead or at least assess whether bypassing/turning back is the safer option.

Route-finding can be part of the work. Reports mention the trail being easy to follow in the first miles for some hikers, while later portions can become run out or overgrown, occasionally requiring you to push through brush or re-locate the tread when it disappears for short stretches.

Biological hazards show up along the line: poison oak can encroach on the path in wooded segments, and ticks are present. If you’re sensitive, use long sleeves/long pants and check thoroughly after the hike.

This is mapped as a moderate-difficulty long-distance hike with an overall distance of about 17.67 km (~10.8 miles). Because the profile is an unrelenting ascent and typical trips run about 7–7.5 hours for many hikers, plan for a long day and keep your turnaround point flexible if conditions are deteriorating in the upper country.
