Manuka Hut
Manuka Hut is a Department of Conservation backcountry hut in Hakatere Conservation Park (Canterbury region). It has 6 bunk beds and is generally used as a basic/bivvy-style shelter; no bookings are required—use is first come, first served. The hut is at risk of flooding during heavy rain events, so during storms monitor river levels and be ready to move to higher ground behind the hut if needed.
The hut has mattresses and a fireplace, plus toilets with a pit latrine disposal system. There’s limited firewood at the hut and you should not cut down vegetation. The water supply is a stream, and Te Araroa Trail walkers need the Te Araroa Trail Pass; from Lake Emily it’s a 4.5 km, about 1 hour 30 minutes walk to the hut (with additional Te Araroa approach options from Mount Somers).
