Mauna Loa Cabin
Mauna Loa Cabin is a backcountry wilderness hut in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, run by the National Park Service. The cabin has basic shelter and sleeping space plus a cooking area and a pit toilet, with water available at the cabin that must be treated before drinking.
The hut is intended for overnight use with reservation requirements and a capacity of 12 people. The NPS backcountry hiking page for Mauna Loa groups “backcountry sites” by cabin; it notes that Mauna Loa Summit Cabin is not accessible from Mauna Loa Trail due to trail damage from the 2022 Mauna Loa eruption, while the Puʻuʻulaʻula (Red Hill) Cabin and Mauna Loa Cabin are part of the main backcountry options on Mauna Loa.
NPS describes Mauna Loa as high-altitude and rocky, with cairn-marked routefinding that can be difficult to follow in low visibility. The same NPS page stresses altitude illness risk and the need to descend if symptoms develop, and it also notes that open fires are prohibited.
