Maungahuka Hut
Maungahuka Hut is a standard 10-bunk backcountry hut in Tararua Forest Park, managed by the Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai. It’s part of the Main Range hut network and is used as an overnight stop for the Tararua Peaks circuit, with the current 10-bunk hut built in 2006 to replace an earlier Forest Service hut from 1962.
Bookings aren’t required; it’s first come, first served. Fees apply: $10 per night for adults (18+), $5 per night for youth (5–17), and free for children/infants (0–4). The hut has pit latrines and no fireplace, and drinking water is untreated—so plan to treat what you collect.
Access is typically from either Otaki Forks (western side of the Tararua Ranges) or the Holdsworth Road end (eastern side). From Otaki Forks, the DOC route tramp heads to Kime Hut (about 5–6 hours) before crossing the peaks to Maungahuka Hut (another 7–9 hours); from Holdsworth Road end, it’s via Neill Forks Hut through Totara Flats and Cone Ridge (about 8 hours), then another 3 hours to Maungahuka Hut. There’s no heating at the hut, and visibility on the Main Range can be very poor, so cold and navigation-ready preparation matter.
